The Holy Mountain
Mt. Horeb is the place where Moses encountered the one true God of heaven and earth, when the
LORD called Moses to take the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt. It was Joseph who brought
his family into Egypt, and now it is Moses, Joseph’s relative, who is called by God to bring them
out. At the time when Moses was born, the Pharaoh who would eventually become his father had
called his army to kill all the baby boys of Israel. Moses’ life was a rare exception—God saved him
through his mother’s creativity. She built a small ark and set the boy afloat by the banks of the River
Nile near the home of Pharaoh’s daughter. The daughter of Pharaoh discovered the baby boy and
took him in as her child. Moses was raised in the ways of the ancient Egyptians. When he was older,
Moses saw an Egyptian soldier beating a Hebrew, so Moses killed him in defense. The next day,
when Moses tried to settle a fight between two Hebrews, he realized his secret about murdering the
Egyptian had been discovered, and he had to flee for his life to Midian. Moses thought that his life
was over, but then God showed up and the world would never be the same.
